Sacramento, Calif. — Today, the Sacramento Kings and Kings Foundation announced the recipients for the third annual Pete Saco Awards. The trio of annual awards named in recognition of recently retired Commissioner for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section, Pete Saco, will honor one local sports team, coach, and student-athlete for their undeniable sportsmanship and service.
The awardees will be recognized during halftime as the team takes on the Houston Rockets at Golden 1 Center on Sunday, April 9.
“We’re honored to highlight this year’s Pete Saco Award recipients here at Golden 1 Center,” said Executive Director of the Kings Foundation, Scott Moak. “We commend their academic achievements, and irrefutable sportsmanship, and will continue to support and root for success throughout their future endeavors.”
Former CIF Commissioner Pete Saco and Kings President Chris Granger will present the recipients with awards center court during halftime.
The 2016-17 Pete Saco Award recipients are:
Pete Saco Scholarship Award—Dillon Samson
Recognized twice by the San-Joaquin Section League as an All-Academic Student-Athlete, this 4.0 student-athlete participated in a variety of sports including, football, basketball, golf and cross country. As an active member of his high school leadership class and frequent volunteer at a local food bank, Linden High School senior Dillon Samson has been selected as the Pete Saco Scholarship Awardee. Samson will be presented with a $1,985 mini college scholarship from the Sacramento Kings Foundation.
Lifetime Achievement Award—Mark Lee
For over 16 years, Mark Lee has lead student athletics at Placer High school as Athletic Director. Currently, in his 18th season as Head Boys Basketball Coach, Lee earned his 500th victory as he led the Placer Hillmen to a third straight conference title and the winningest season is in school history.
Community Impact Award—West Campus Girls Basketball Team
Finishing the 2016-17 season 30-4, the West Camps Girls Basketball team is the second team from the Sacramento City Unified School District to win the State Title. Head coach John Langston will accept and receive the award on the team’s behalf.
