On the Beat | Sixers Finalize Contingent Bound for Utah

CAMDEN – After spending three days practicing and getting to know each other, all 14 players invited to the 76ers’ summer league mini-camp in Camden this past week will be travelling with the team to Salt Lake City for Monday’s Utah Jazz Summer League opener versus the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers finalized their roster for competition in Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon, following the final workout of the camp, which was held at the club’s training complex.

2017 top pick Markelle Fultz will help lead the Summer Sixers, along with rising second-year Sixer Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, who ended up starting the last 18 games of the 2016-2017 regular season.

Jonah Bolden, the Australian forward chosen 36th overall in this year’s draft, will also make the trek to Utah, along with forward Alex Poythress and guard Larry Drew II, both of whom have past playing experience with the Sixers.

Given Fultz’s pedigree and promise, there figures to be plenty of anticipation surrounding seeing him in action. As this week’s mini-camp progressed, the Sixers felt he was getting more comfortable in his new surroundings.

“I learned the plays a little bit more, I learned the defense,” Fultz said Friday, “so, I’ve got a feel for what I was doing. That’s when my basketball instincts start kicking in. After I learn what I’ve got to do, I just start going with the flow.”

The combo guard, who last Thursday became the fourth No. 1 selection in Sixers history, enjoyed having the chance to be immersed in a team setting while prepping for summer league competition. It was his first opportunity to play 5-on-5 basketball on a consistent basis since his college career at Washington ended in February.

“The bonding is great,” said the 19-year old Fultz. “Everybody’s getting along, we’re having fun. When we step on the court, we’re competing. That’s all you can ask for, really. I think everybody’s having a good time right now, enjoying this process.”

Philadelphians Brandon Austin and Darryl Reynolds, who went to Villanova, will accompany the Sixers out west. Former Saint Joseph’s Hawk Isaiah Miles will be part of the group, too.
